Barred Rocks have been a backyard flock favorite for years and years! Popular not only because of the high egg production and large, meaty bodies, these birds are also very cold hardy and have a docile temperament to boot! Add to it their lovely black and white barred plumage and you've got a great all around breed.
Description at 1 Day Old:
Black chicks with distinctive white or pale yellow spots on their heads, lighter bellies, and dark legs.
Description at Maturity:
Black-and-white barred plumage, broad rounded bodies, yellow legs, and bright red single combs.
What color eggs does a Barred Rock lay, and how many a year?
Barred Rock hens lay about 200 to 280 large light brown eggs a year. The Barred Rock is also called the Barred Plymouth Rock or Plymouth Rock, and some folks search for it as Bard Rock.
When do Barred Rock hens start laying?
Barred Rocks mature at about 22 weeks, and hens usually start laying soon after.
Can I order only hens, or will I get roosters?
Your choice. Order Female for hens only, Male for roosters, or Straight Run for chicks boxed as hatched, which usually means a mix. Our sexing is guaranteed 90% accurate. You don't need a rooster for eggs, and one rooster for every 6 to 10 hens is plenty if you want fertile eggs.
Is the Barred Rock cold hardy, and what is its temperament?
Yes. Barred Rocks are very cold hardy and do well in most climates. Hens are quiet and friendly. Roosters are loud and can be bossy with other chickens.
Do you ship Barred Rock chicks?
Yes. We ship by USPS to every state except Hawaii, and you pick your ship week in the cart from the weeks we are hatching this breed. What is the difference between a Barred Rock and a Plymouth Blue Rock?
The Barred Rock is the classic black and white heritage bird and a true dual-purpose breed. Our Plymouth Blue Rock is a cross built on the Barred Rock line, with smoky blue-gray feathers and a slightly higher egg count.
