This hybrid was developed in Czech Republic by crossing Black Copper Marans and Barred Rocks. This breed was developed to produce extra large eggs with very dark brown shells (chocolate eggs) more efficiently than most very dark egg producers which tend to have low laying numbers and high appetites.
Description at 1 Day Old:
Black chicks with soft brown or cream-colored markings on their faces, chests, and bellies.
Description at Maturity:
Glossy black plumage, often with copper-brown highlights around the neck, a sturdy body, and a bright red single comb.
What color eggs does a Mystic Maran lay, and how many a year?
Mystic Maran hens lay about 200 to 260 extra large, very dark brown eggs a year. Folks call them chocolate eggs. You may see this breed searched as Mystic Marans, Mystic Moran, or Mystic Marran.
When do Mystic Maran hens start laying?
They mature at about 21 weeks and usually start laying soon after.
Can I order only hens, or will I get roosters?
Your choice. Order Female for hens only, Male for roosters, or Straight Run for chicks boxed as hatched, which usually means a mix. Our sexing is guaranteed 90% accurate. You don't need a rooster for eggs, and one rooster for every 6 to 10 hens is plenty if you want fertile eggs.

The Mystic Maran is a cross of a Black Copper Maran and a Barred Rock, developed in the Czech Republic. It lays the same kind of dark chocolate egg but lays more of them. Purebred dark egg layers like the Black Copper Maran tend to lay fewer eggs and eat more feed.
What is the difference between a Mystic Maran and a Coco Espresso?
Both lay dark chocolate eggs. The Mystic Maran lays an extra large egg and most have feathered feet. The Coco Espresso lays a few more eggs a year.
