This breed has been popular for a very long time and is even the state bird of Rhode Island in which it was developed. Known for their hardiness and egg laying ability, they also get to be a large bird. Due to their prolific and dependable egg laying ability, the Rhode Island Reds are used in many hybrid breeds found today.

What color eggs does a Rhode Island Red lay, and how many a year?

Rhode Island Red hens lay about 200 to 280 large light brown eggs a year. You may see it searched as Road Island Red or RIR.

When do Rhode Island Red hens start laying?

Rhode Island Reds mature at about 21 to 22 weeks, and hens usually start laying soon after.

Can I order only hens, or will I get roosters?

Your choice. Order Female for hens only, Male for roosters, or Straight Run for chicks boxed as hatched, which usually means a mix. Our sexing is guaranteed 90% accurate. You don't need a rooster for eggs, and one rooster for every 6 to 10 hens is plenty if you want fertile eggs. Cockerels can be aggressive, so order females if you want a calm laying flock.
