Black Sex Links are a cross between a New Hampshire rooster and a Barred Rock hen. The outcome is a very high egg production that can reach up to 300 eggs per year depending on the quality of care and feed as well as having a plump body. They are sexed as chicks by the difference in coloring and as mature birds, the hens will be black with red neck feathers and the roosters will look like a Barred Rock rooster. Great, dependable birds for your flock!

 

What color eggs does a Black Sex Link lay, and how many a year?

Black Sex Link hens lay about 300 large light brown eggs a year, depending on care and feed. You may know this bird as a Black Star, Black Sexlink, or Rock Red.

When do Black Sex Link hens start laying?

They mature at about 22 weeks and usually start laying soon after.

Can I order only hens, or will I get roosters?

Your choice. Order Female for hens only, Male for roosters, or Straight Run for chicks boxed as hatched, which usually means a mix. Our sexing is guaranteed 90% accurate. You don't need a rooster for eggs, and one rooster for every 6 to 10 hens is plenty if you want fertile eggs. Black Sex Links are sexed by down color at hatch. Grown hens are black with red neck feathers, and roosters look like a Barred Rock rooster.

Yes. Black Sex Links are hardy in any climate and do well on free range. They are a dependable, easygoing bird.
