Popular for their beautiful markings, the Rouens also make for good foragers. They are a heavier duck than a wild Mallard and can make for good meat ducks as well. While they do lay eggs, they are not known to be a substantial layer. Males will have a green head with a white collar, a grey body, and have black tail feathers. The females will be mottled brown.
What color eggs do Rouen Ducks lay, and how many a year?
Rouen hens lay about 140 to 180 cream or light green eggs a year. They are raised more for meat and good looks than eggs. It is often misspelled as Ruen or Rouan duck.
When do Rouen Duck hens start laying?
Rouens grow slowly and usually start laying around 6 months old.
Can I order only female Rouen Ducks?
Our ducks are straight run only, boxed as hatched, so you will get a mix of drakes and hens. You can tell them apart as they grow. Hens have a loud quack and drakes have a quieter, raspy voice, and grown drakes get a curled feather at the tip of the tail. Grown drakes have a green head, white collar, and gray body. Hens are mottled brown.
Are Rouen Ducks cold hardy, and what is their temperament?
Yes. Rouens are hardy in most climates and calm. They are much bigger than a wild Mallard and don't fly.
Do you ship Rouen ducklings?
Yes. We ship by USPS to every state except Hawaii, and you pick your ship week in the cart from the weeks we are hatching this breed. Order minimums change by season, and your cart shows the current minimum before checkout. Every order is covered by our 100% Live Arrival Guarantee. If they don't arrive alive, call us within 48 hours and we will make it right. Count your chicks when you get them home.
What is the difference between a Rouen and a Mallard?
They share the same coloring, but the Rouen is a domestic duck that grows much larger, about 8 to 10 pounds, and doesn't fly.
