Isa Browns

The Isa Brown holds about 60% of The World Brown Egg Market. All other egg-laying breeds are judged and compared to this breed. They offer you exceptional egg output resulting in low feed conversion. Bred for excellent egg size, the in-built adaptability allows you to produce a large and extra large egg size from 62 to 65 grams or so. Isa Browns have current livability of 97.3% and lay about 285 to 300 eggs a year. Average egg weight is 62.8 grams. Very dependable and consistent with their laying, this breed is also a very friendly and docile breed making them great for your flock!

The Isa Brown is a red sex link hybrid. You may know this type of bird by other names, including Cinnamon Queen, Golden Comet, Golden Red, Red Star, or Red Sex Link.

Description at 1 Day Old:

Female mostly red with some yellow striping. Day old male is solid yellow.

Description at Maturity:

Female mostly red with white on tail and wings. Adult male is solid white.

What color eggs does an Isa Brown lay, and how many a year?

Isa Brown hens lay about 285 to 300 large to extra large brown eggs a year. They are our best brown egg layer and the bird every other egg breed gets measured against. You may also see it written as ISA Brown, Isa Browns, or Issa Brown.

When do Isa Brown hens start laying?

Isa Browns mature at about 20 weeks and start laying quickly after that.

Can I order only hens, or will I get roosters?

Your choice. Order Female for hens only, Male for roosters, or Straight Run for chicks boxed as hatched, which usually means a mix. Our sexing is guaranteed 90% accurate. You don't need a rooster for eggs, and one rooster for every 6 to 10 hens is plenty if you want fertile eggs. Isa Browns are a sex-link hybrid, so we sort hens from roosters by down color the day they hatch. Roosters are small, about 4 pounds, and not a meat bird.

Is the Isa Brown cold hardy, and what is its temperament?

Isa Browns do well in heat and fair in cold, so give them a draft-free coop in a Michigan-style winter. They are friendly and docile, and can get pecky with age.

What is the difference between an Isa Brown and an Isa White?

The Isa Brown lays brown eggs. The Isa White is a separate commercial hybrid that lays white eggs. We don't carry the Isa White. If you want a high-production white egg layer, our White Leghorn is the bird for that job.

Is an Isa Brown the same as a Golden Comet or Red Sex Link?

They fill the same role. Golden Comet and Red Sex Link are common names for red sex-link layer hybrids like the Isa Brown.
