Cold hardy chicken breeds carry larger bodies, full plumage and smaller combs, which helps them handle cold weather. Classic choices include Barred Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, Black Australorps and Black Sex Links, all dependable brown egg layers. The Light Brahma adds feathered feet and a big frame. Golden and Silver Laced Wyandottes bring striking laced feathers. For color in the egg basket, look at the Americana, Olive Egger, Coco Espresso and Royal Sussex.
Even cold hardy birds need a dry, draft-free coop and fresh water that does not freeze. Give them that, and these breeds are built to handle the rest.
